The University of California, Merced opened 5 years ago and is the youngest campus in the University of California system. As the first American research university of the 21st century, the campus has seized the opportunity to incorporate and respond to the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.

The competition ArchitectueAtZero is a respone to the zero net energy targets (ZNE) set out in the 2008 report “California Long Term Energy efficiency strategic plan”.  The competition was presented by the American Institute of Architects San Francisco chapter (AIA SF) and Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) in partnership with the University of California, Merced.

The brief was to design a diagrammatic/conceptual zero net energy district plan for the provided Bellevue Gateway site and a detailed zero net energy design for an administrative office building/welcome centre.

In response to the competition brief the primary focus of my thesis project was to answer the following questions;
- What components are needed to create the foundation for a net zero energy district?
- What role does the individual building play in contributing to this vision?
- How can a design process mainly based on, and inspired by an ecological analysis contribute to spacial and aesthethic architectural qualities?
